The nonsensical ponderings of Eric Frisch...

I know there's a lot of complaining about the advertising here on Mindsay, but see what you think of this (and to anyone who might be reading the imported note on Facebook, I'm especially curious about your thoughts).  I remember hearing a while back that Facebook was implementing a new advertising strategy that was going to share more of their user's personal information with advertisers.  I guess I didn't take much notice of it at the time, and I didn't really notice any effects... until the last few days.

Suddenly Facebook advertisers seem keenly aware of the fact that I'm a single, straight, Christian male.  And granted, all of that information is on my profile, but it's there for my friends (after all, isn't that the point of the site?), not Facebook's "generous supporters."  I'm getting ads that specifically mention musical artists that I have listed on my profile, online Bible studies, and resources for worship leaders.  As if that wasn't creepy enough... almost every time that I view the profile of a female friend, I get ads for dating sites (both "Christian" and otherwise).  Apparently Facebook thinks I'm a stalker trolling the internet for love.  It seems to me that Facebook is the one doing the stalking, and to be quite honest, it's creeping me out a little bit.  I realize that Google's been using something similar for years, but somehow it seemed far less intrusive.

Is this happening to anyone else?  And if it is... what do you think of it?  Are you as troubled by it as I am?
