The nonsensical ponderings of Eric Frisch...

Taking a break from the mass amounts of work I have to do tonight to talk a little bit about Ash Wednesday.  It's technically Thursday now, but since I haven't been to bed yet, we'll count it.

I think it's interesting how our culture is able to turn everything back around and make it about us.  The day before Lent begins has become known as "Fat Tuesday."  People talk about being repentant and giving things up for Lent, then use the day before the season begins to gorge themselves and disregard all the things Lent stands for.  To me, even the idea of giving things up is very selfish.  The Bible talks about Lent being a season of "prayer and fasting," which would imply going without comforts, but our society has made it a boasting point.  "Hey, look at what I'm giving up for Lent!" - that's the kind of idea I see and hear from people.  It's supposed to be a personal thing... something that brings us closer to God... how other people view it/us shouldn't really be an issue at that point.

How self-centered have we become when even our worship and sacrifice is focused on ourselves?
